How it works

How to make a cursive worksheet

  1. Type the words or sentences you want practiced, one per line. Use the example buttons for a spelling list, a sentence, or the days of the week.

  2. Choose the letter style (light gray, dotted, hollow outline, or solid), the line size for the grade, how many trace and blank rows follow each line, and letter or A4 paper.

  3. Check the preview, add a page title and a student name if you like, then click Download PDF and print it. The file builds in your browser.

What to put on it

Spelling lists, sentences, joins, names

A custom cursive worksheet is most useful when it carries the words a student is already working on. A few patterns that teachers and parents use every week.

Spelling words

One word per line with Repeat turned on. Each word fills its row, followed by a blank row to write it from memory. Ten words on primary lines make about two pages.

Sentences and copywork

A verse, a quote, a line from the read-aloud. Long lines wrap on their own. Use one trace row and one blank row for younger writers, or set trace rows to zero and blank rows to two for copywork.

Letter and join drills

Type a single letter, or a pair such as “br” or “ow”, with Repeat on. The sheet fills the row with joined copies. The letter pages explain each stroke, and the lowercase guide groups letters by the families worth drilling together.

Names and signatures

For a whole class, the name tracing tool makes one page per name. Adults relearning cursive can type their own name here with two trace rows and three blank rows, then work toward a signature.

Choices

Trace, dotted, hollow, or solid

The letter style changes what the student does with the sheet.

Dotted letters are a dot-by-dot path around each stroke. They give the most support and suit the first weeks with a letter. Hollow outline letters show the whole shape and ask the pencil to run down the middle. Light gray letters look like finished writing and suit third grade and up. Solid letters are a model only: the student reads the row and writes the line underneath from sight, then from memory.

Line size follows the grade. Primary lines are tall, with a dashed midline, for kindergarten to second grade. Intermediate fits third to fifth grade. Small is close to notebook paper and suits older students and adults. Every size keeps the same four guides: headline, dashed midline, baseline, and a faint descender line.

Rows per line is the part most generators leave out. After the model row you can add up to three rows that show the letters again to trace, and up to three blank rows to write from memory. The preview updates as you change them, so you know the page count before you print.

Why it looks right

Real school cursive with real joins

Most worksheet makers set the text in a decorative script font. This one uses a school hand.

Every sheet is set in Playwrite US Trad, a traditional US school cursive published under the SIL Open Font License by TypeTogether. It is the same face on every letter page, the alphabet chart, and the words in cursive pages, so a child sees one consistent letterform from the chart to the worksheet. The letters connect with proper entry and exit strokes, the way handwriting does, rather than sitting beside each other like typed script.

The style is closest to Zaner-Bloser. If your school teaches D’Nealian or another hand, the school styles page shows which letters differ so you can point them out.

Names stay on your device

The builder runs entirely in your browser. We never receive the names, words, or titles you type, and nothing is saved when you close the page.

Worksheet generator questions

Is the cursive worksheet generator free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on sheets or pages, and no watermark. The only paid item on the site is the optional workbook, which collects a full course in one file.

What is the difference between dotted, hollow, and light gray letters?

All three are for tracing. Dotted letters give a dot-by-dot path and suit beginners. Hollow outlines show the full shape of each stroke and suit a child who is past the first weeks. Light gray letters look like the finished writing and suit older students. Solid black is a model to copy from, with blank lines under it.

Which line size should I pick?

Primary lines are the tallest and fit kindergarten to second grade. Intermediate suits third to fifth grade. Small lines are for older students and adults who want the size of normal notebook paper.

What cursive style do the sheets use?

Traditional US school cursive, set in Playwrite US Trad. It is closest to Zaner-Bloser, and the letters join the way they do in real handwriting. If your school teaches D’Nealian, the school styles page lists the letters that differ.

Do you store the names or words I type?

No. The PDF is built inside your browser. Names, words, and titles are never sent to a server and are not saved on your device after you close the page.

Can I make a whole paragraph or a poem?

Yes. Paste as much as you want. Long lines wrap onto more rows, and the preview shows the page count before you download. Very long texts are capped at 40 pages per file, so split a book chapter into a few sheets.

Can I print on A4 or in landscape?

Yes. Choose A4 or US Letter and tall or wide orientation. Wide pages fit longer sentences on one row at the primary line size.

How do I make a name tracing sheet for a class?

Use the name tracing tool instead. Paste the class list, one name per line, and you get one page per name with the name to trace and blank lines to copy it.
