Cursive letters / Q
Cursive Q: capital and lowercase q
Cursive Q starts on the left below the midline, curves up and over clockwise to the headline, sweeps down to a small loop near the baseline, and runs its tail right into the next letter. Lowercase q starts with a counterclockwise oval, drops a straight stem below the baseline, loops, and exits right from the baseline.

How to write Q in cursive
Capital Q
Watch the pen. Each number appears where its step starts; the steps below match.
Capital Q, step by step
- Start on the left, below the midline. Curve up and over clockwise, touching the headline.
- Come down the right side in a long sweep toward the baseline, then swing down and left.
- Make a small closed loop at the bottom left, just above the baseline.
- Cross your line and run the tail right along the baseline, curving up into the next letter.
The whole capital Q in one read
Capital Q in this style looks like the number 2 with a loop at the bottom. Start on the left, below the midline. Curve up and to the right, over the top at the headline, and down the right side in a long clockwise sweep. As you near the baseline, swing down and to the left, then turn back to make a small closed loop at the bottom left. Cross your own line and run the tail to the right along the baseline, dipping just under it and curving up at the end. That tail is the connector. Capital Q joins the letter that follows it.
Lowercase q
Watch the pen. Each number appears where its step starts; the steps below match.
Lowercase q, step by step
- With no baseline lead-in, start just under the midline on the right. Circle counterclockwise and close the oval at the midline.
- From the top right of the oval, slant a straight stem down to the descender line.
- Loop back up on the right of the stem and close the loop at the baseline.
- Swing right from the baseline and curve up a little to exit.
The whole lowercase q in one read
Lowercase q has no lead-in stroke when it starts a word. Begin just under the midline at the right and circle counterclockwise: left, down to the baseline, and back up to the midline to close the oval. From the top right of the oval, slant a straight stem down through the baseline to the descender line. Turn at the bottom and come back up on the right side of the stem, making a narrow loop that closes at the baseline. From that closing point, swing right and curve up a little to exit. The loop turns right, toward the next letter.

Joining q to other letters
q into u
The q loop closes at the baseline and the exit rises straight into the first upstroke of the u. Climb to the midline, slant down, make the round cup on the baseline, and climb to the midline again for the second stroke. That second cup is what makes qu, and it matters because q almost always comes before u in English words. Keep the two u points the same height as the top of the q oval.
q into i
From the baseline where the q loop closes, the exit climbs once to the midline, slants back down, and curves up to finish. That single point is the whole i. Add the dot last, above the stroke and below the headline. Without the dot, qi looks like qu missing its second cup, so do not skip it. The q stem and the i stroke should lean at the same angle.
q into n
The exit climbs from the baseline to the midline, tips over in a small, narrow turn, and slides straight back down over the line it just made. From the baseline, go up again and make one wide, rounded hump, then come down and finish with a small upswing. The narrow first stroke and the round second hump together make the n. If the second top comes to a point instead, the pair reads as qu.
Watch for
Common cursive q mistakes
Swinging the loop left so q becomes g
Lowercase q and g start the same way: a counterclockwise oval and a stem below the baseline. The only difference is the bottom. The g loop swings left and comes back up across the stem. The q loop turns right and closes at the baseline, then exits to the right. If your tail curls left under the oval, you have written g. Think of the q tail pointing toward the next letter.
Circling the oval clockwise
The q oval must go counterclockwise: from the top right, travel left first, then down and around. Starting to the right and going clockwise makes a shape that cannot flow into the stem, and many kids end up with a backward p. Once the oval is closed on the right side at the midline, the stem drops from that same point. The capital Q is the one that travels clockwise, not the lowercase.
Writing capital Q as a round O
Printed Q is an O with a small tail across it, and many adults write it that way in cursive too. This capital is not a closed oval. It opens on the left, travels clockwise like a 2, and finishes with a little loop at the bottom and a long tail on the baseline. If you close the top into an O, the tail has nowhere to go and the letter cannot join the next one.

Cursive Q questions
How do you write a capital Q in cursive?
Capital Q in this style looks like the number 2 with a loop at the bottom. Start on the left, below the midline. Curve up and to the right, over the top at the headline, and down the right side in a long clockwise sweep.
How do you write a lowercase q in cursive?
Lowercase q has no lead-in stroke when it starts a word. Begin just under the midline at the right and circle counterclockwise: left, down to the baseline, and back up to the midline to close the oval. From the top right of the oval, slant a straight stem down through the baseline to the descender line.
Does cursive capital Q connect to the next letter?
Yes. In traditional cursive the capital Q carries its last stroke into the next lowercase letter, so a word like "Quit" is written without lifting after the capital.
What is the most common mistake with cursive q?
Swinging the loop left so q becomes g. Lowercase q and g start the same way: a counterclockwise oval and a stem below the baseline. The only difference is the bottom.
Can I copy and paste a cursive Q?
Yes. The copy box on this page gives you Unicode script letters (Qq) that paste into bios, captions, and messages. They look like cursive but are a font-style symbol, not handwriting. For a printed sheet, use the free Q worksheet on this page.
Is cursive q the same in Zaner-Bloser and D’Nealian?
Lowercase q: Zaner-Bloser starts on the oval with no baseline entry. D'Nealian adds a baseline lead-in. Uppercase Q in D'Nealian looks like a 2 and connects to the next letter. Zaner-Bloser Q ends under the baseline and does not connect.
