January in cursive
January in cursive is one continuous stroke with no pen lifts. The capital J climbs to the headline, drops straight through the baseline into a loop, and crosses itself on the way up into the a. After that come n, u, a and r at the midline, and the y finishes the word with a loop below the baseline.

How to write January in cursive
January, step by step
- Capital J: start on the left a little below halfway between the baseline and the midline. Curve up to the headline and turn right over the top. Slant straight down through the middle, past the baseline, to the descender line. Loop left, come back up, and cross the stem at the baseline. Exit up to the right: this is the join into the a.
- a: from the J's exit, pull left and down to make the oval, closing it at the midline. Come straight back down the right side to the baseline and finish with a short upturn.
- n: from the a's upturn, slant down to the baseline, retrace up, roll over one rounded hump at the midline, and slant down to the baseline with a short undercurve.
- u: from the n's undercurve, slant down to the baseline, round the bottom, and swing up to a sharp point at the midline. Retrace down the same slant, round the bottom again, and finish with a short stroke curving up to the right.
- a: from the u's exit, start at the top right of the oval and pull left and down, closing the oval at the midline. Come straight down to the baseline and curve up to the right.
- r: undercurve up past the midline to a small peak, step right with a short shoulder, slant down to the baseline, and curve up to exit.
- y: from the r's exit, slant down to the baseline, round the bottom, and climb to a sharp point at the midline. Retrace straight down through the baseline to the descender line, loop left and back up, crossing the stem at the baseline, and rise to the right. There is no pen lift anywhere in January.
The capital J joins
The cursive J is one of the capitals that connects. It starts on the left a little below halfway between the baseline and the midline, curves up to the headline, turns over the top, and slants straight down past the baseline to the descender line. Loop left, come back up, and cross the stem at the baseline. The exit rises to the right and becomes the start of the a, so you never lift between the J and the rest of the word.
n, u, a, r: four midline letters in a row
After the J the word stays small. The a closes its oval at the midline, the n has one hump, the u has two valleys and a sharp point at the midline, and the second a closes again. These four letters are where January goes wrong: if the n and the u look alike, count the humps and the valleys. The n has one hump and ends with an undercurve; the u dips to the baseline twice.
Ending on the y
The y is the other letter that goes below the baseline. It is written as a u-shaped body at the midline, then a straight stroke down through the baseline to the descender line, a loop left, and a stroke that crosses the stem at the baseline and rises to the right. It has no hook at the start. The J and the y are the only two letters that cross the baseline, so they frame the word.

With a lowercase j the first letter is a stem through the baseline with a dot, so the word needs one pen lift for the dot.

The short form: capital J joined to a and n, then a period after the lift.

A date line for a calendar or card: the word, a space, then an upright numeral. Numbers are not joined.

January in cursive: questions
How do you write January in cursive?
In one continuous stroke: a capital J that loops below the baseline and joins into the a, then n, u, a and r joined at the midline, and a y with a loop below the baseline. There are no pen lifts.
Does the cursive capital J connect to the next letter?
Yes. After the loop below the baseline, the J's exit rises to the right and becomes the start of the a, so January is written without lifting after the capital.
How many pen lifts are there in January in cursive?
None in the word itself. A lowercase january needs one for the dot on the j, and the only other lifts come from adding a period for Jan. or a space before the day of the month.
Which letters in January go below the baseline?
The capital J and the y. Both drop through the baseline and loop back up. The a, n, u, a and r all stay between the baseline and the midline.
How do you write Jan. in cursive?
Capital J joined to a and n. Lift the pen and add the period on the baseline.
Can I copy and paste January in cursive?
Yes. The copy box on this page gives you Unicode script text for a caption or card. It is a font style, not joined handwriting, so the letters will not connect the way the picture does.
