How to write November in cursive

Follow the picture above from left to right. The steps name each letter as it is written in this word, with every pen lift called out.

November, step by step

  1. Capital N: start on the left just below the headline with a small hook up to the headline. Slant a straight stroke down to the baseline. Retrace up, roll over one wide arch at the headline, and slant down to the baseline again. Turn up in an undercurve: this is the join into the o.
  2. o: from the N's undercurve, make the o counterclockwise and close it at the midline. Leave from the top with a short bridge along the midline.
  3. v: from the bridge, slant down to the baseline, round the bottom, climb back to the midline, and finish with a small curl and a flick to the right. Do not dip back to the baseline.
  4. e: start from the v's flick at the midline. Loop left so the small loop sits between the baseline and the midline, come down to the baseline, and curve up.
  5. m: slant down to the baseline, retrace, roll over a rounded hump at the midline, slant down, and repeat for a second hump. Three downstrokes, two humps, then a short undercurve.
  6. b: climb from the m all the way to the headline, loop left at the top, and come straight down to the baseline. Curve up into a small bowl whose top stops at the midline, and carry across at that height.
  7. e: start the second e from the b's stop at the midline, loop, and come down to the baseline.
  8. r: undercurve up past the midline to a small peak, step right with a short shoulder, slant down to the baseline, and finish with an upturn. There is no pen lift anywhere in November.

The capital N joins

Unlike many capitals, the cursive N connects to the letter after it. In the picture the N starts with a small hook just below the headline, drops a straight stroke to the baseline, retraces up and over one wide arch, and comes down again. Its last stroke turns up into an undercurve that becomes the top of the o. Keep the arch of the N just under the headline so the o, which sits at the midline, reads as a smaller letter beside it.

The o-v-e run stays high

The middle of November is three letters that never touch the baseline between them in the way most joins do. The o closes at the midline and leaves from the top along a short bridge. The v drops to the baseline with a round bottom, climbs back to the midline, and finishes with a small curl. The e starts from that curl at the midline, loops, and only then comes down. If your v and e sag to the baseline before they start, the word looks like noruember.

The b stops at the midline

The b is the only tall letter after the capital. It climbs from the m all the way to the headline, loops left, comes straight down, and curves up into a small bowl whose top stops at the midline. The second e starts from that stop, at midline height, which is the same high hand-off the v made earlier. The r that ends the word has the traditional small shoulder: up past the midline to a peak, a short step right, and down to the baseline with a flick up to finish.

Writing the date

On a letter, a journal page, or a chalkboard the month usually comes with a day: November 26. Write the word, lift, leave a space about the width of an o, and write the numerals in their normal upright form. Cursive numbers are not joined. For the short form, Nov. is the capital N, o, v, and a period, with the v given its finishing flick before the lift.

November in cursive: questions

How do you write November in cursive?

In one continuous stroke: a capital N that joins into the o, a midline bridge into a round-bottomed v, a high hand-off into an e, an m with two humps, a b that reaches the headline and stops its bowl at the midline, then an e and an r. There are no pen lifts.

Does the cursive capital N connect to the next letter?

Yes. The N's last stroke turns up in an undercurve that becomes the top of the o, so November is written without lifting after the capital.

How many pen lifts are there in November in cursive?

None in the word itself. The only lifts come when you add a period for Nov. or a space before the day of the month.

Which letters in November are tall?

Only two reach the headline: the capital N and the b. The o, v, e, m, e, and r all stay between the baseline and the midline.

How do you write Nov. in cursive?

Capital N joined to o and v, with the v finishing in its small flick. Lift the pen and add the period on the baseline.

How do you write a date like November 26 in cursive?

Write the word, lift, leave a gap about the width of an o, and write the numerals upright. Cursive numbers are not joined to each other or to the word.
